EARLY LEARNING CENTRE

BIRTH – 2 YEARS

At Fernhill we believe that the first 3 years of life are critical. Repeated experiences are the chief architect of the brain since learning is a sequential process. Feelings about learning, happy experiences and interest in the world start long before school is in sight. Learning starts the day the baby is born.

Since children learn through their senses we have implemented a neurocognitive programme which enhances brain development. From birth the baby’s brain cells proliferate in order to make neural connections that will shape its life for better or worse. The secret of the success of this programme lies in the sequential and daily repeated experiences (exercises). These exercises help to “wire” or develop brain areas as the child receives the new and necessary information or stimuli from the environment.

The child’s brain follows a specific learning process to the learn skills they need to master. These skills are learnt through movement. In other words, children have to learn to move in order to move to learn. A moving child is therefore a learning child. To meet the demands of this learning area we have implemented the Moving to Learn Programme.

In the words of Rae Pica (Your Active Child, 2003), “Childhood is not a dress rehearsal for adulthood! It is a separate, unique and very special phase of life”.

Fernhill Pre-Primary was established in 1985 as Wonderworld Pre-Primary School. Our 31-year track record is well known and highly regarded in the Randburg area. We offer a unique, structured, stimulating curriculum  where our school’s educational focus is on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) which provides a holistic platform for Foundation Phase learning experiences.

Our leading edge Smart Start Programme which includes Smart Words, and the PMP (Perceptual Motor Programme) is one of Australia’s most highly rated educational programmes. The PMP is a sequential development programme which aims to develop the child’s perceptions and understanding of himself and his environment through movement and motor experiences. Children who enjoy the learning journey are happy, excited children who want to come to school and are enthusiastic about new experiences and information. They are physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually able to cope with the demands that the schooling system places on them.

Fernhill Primary specialises in Foundation and Intermediate Phase Education. We believe it is during these educational phases where solid foundations are laid for everything that follows in life. Children are learning to learn. Our aim is to maximise the learning opportunities that will equip each child with the necessary skills for life-long learning. In the process we are empowering a future generation of independent, confident and skilled students who are enabled to accept and conquer the challenges of the 21st Century.

While the Fernhill curriculum is fully CAPS compliant, we’ve added many critical elements to make it an enriched leading edge curriculum which includes Smart Words and the Smart Starters Perceptual Motor Programme (PMP) which is one of Australia’s most highly rated educational programmes. PRINCIPAL/OWNER

Charmaine has been involved with foundation phase education since 1985. She’s passionate about children and to effect the maximised development of their potential. In 2010 Charmaine founded Wonderworld Study Centre which has undergone a major metamorphosis to emerge as Fernhill School in the last quarter of 2012. The programmes of Fernhill solidify the skills children need to enjoy the learning journey throughout their schooling career. This enables parents to rest in the knowledge that their children receive a world-class formative education at a specialist Foundation and Intermediate Phase school.

Charmaine is an internationally accredited provider of Neurocognitive Training and Development Programmes, including the Australian Smart Starters Programme, which she has implemented at Fernhill School. She stays current by attending and hosting numerous workshops and conferences in the field of pre- and primary education.
